Landscape Reclamation

Whiteness Head is an 80 hectare site on the coast of the Moray Firth, in northern Scotland. Formerly an extensive natural salt marsh, the land was reclaimed in the 70’s by the oil and gas industry for the construction of oil rig platforms. It hosts a number of habitats for several protected wildlife species such as the bottle-nosed dolphin, osprey and waterfowl. For this reason Whiteness Head has been designated a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar convention and a Special Area of Conservation in the Moray Firth and Inner Moray Firth. The area is to be redeveloped into a 2000 unit housing, town centre and nature reserve zone integrated within the larger landscape framework.
